Tuesday 8 June: Gwithian
A better night “upstairs” and a quieter morning from our neighbours in the hot tub. Breakfast outside in the sunshine before leaving in the Hicks’ car for Hayle. We are confused by ambiguous parking notices but are eventually reassured by googling! We start by walking up along the River Hayle through gardens and a churchyard onto the burrows. Fine views of Carbis Bay, St Ives and the G7 warships. Up and down through sand dunes. We find a hut selling coffee near an impressive albeit rather ugly statue of the G7 summit leaders (Mount Recyclemore) made out of electronic rubbish. We walk to Gwithian and have our picnic lunch on a bench before walking back partly along the impressive 3 mile stretch of golden sand and partly along the coastal path. Simon has packed his swimming trunks but it is quite exposed and windy so he isn’t tempted. Plenty of surf schools are though. Back up the estuary to the car after nearly 8 miles of walking. Time to relax in the campsite reading before walking down to the Porthgwidden Cafe for supper. A lovely table in the glass covered extension with views over the beach and bay. Delicious meal: mackerel, squid, hake, fish curry and even pudding! Cheese and biscuits at the Hicks’ pitch before bed.
